The Problem

Sara, as a nursery school teacher, found the amount of bureaucracy and paperwork frustrating and time consuming. With Ofsted’s extensive reporting requirements, communication with parents, and the required record keeping, working as a nursery practitioner took up many hours of her evenings.

Sara thought there must be a better way.

We knew the problems we wanted to solve, but we didn’t know how to start. Dan from Reason Factory taught us all about the MVP approach, helped us with the outsourcing of our MVP and set us on the right track. His help at the start was invaluable in getting to where we are now.

The Vision

Sara, together with her co-founders, Sam and Ash, had a vision for a simple to use tablet based software platform that would allow nursery staff to easily capture data within the nursery, and automate all the necessary reporting. While some software solutions existed, she had a clear vision of something that would be better than anything else on the market.

With strong domain knowledge, and a clear definition of a problem to solve, the founders were eager to create a product, but they needed some technical help to start.

Our approach

Our engagement started with training the founding team on the MVP approach. What they needed to build was a minimal product to test the market with a compelling set of features that would be sufficient for customers to want to either move from their traditional paper-based approach, or convert from another software provider.

We ran workshops to define the most important problems the software should solve, to create an MVP definition we all believed would be compelling enough to test the market.

With a defined set of features in hand, we helped choose an agency to outsource the first phase of development to.

During the first phase we provided consulting on how to manage the relationship with the agency, how to get the best value from them, and ensured the product was fit for purpose.

Results

The MVP phase was a great success, and the first public release started gaining paying customers immediately.

The decision was then made to move the development in house. We then helped them with how to recruit, set-up, and run an internal development team.

Since then Blossom Educational has gone from strength to strength, growing weekly, and is currently in use across the UK, with over 5000 parents updated daily on their child’s progress.
